The Issue:

Stress, the anticipation of unfavourable situations and the fear of not having the adequate resources to respond to them, has been highlighted by The World Health Organisation as one of the major health challenges of the twenty-first century.

Pressures in the workplace mean that office and business workers are highly likely to have excessive amounts of stress. The city streets offer a moment in a business worker’s day where they can get away from the stresses of work, unwind, and connect, although unfortunately social stigmas hinder people from reaching out. It would be far easier to shift your mood if someone was enthusiastically providing you with the opportunity to take action and interact.

An exuberant high five can convey support and encouragement far more quickly and accurately than words. A momentary positive experience improves wellbeing and can enhance workplace performance as it reduces the stress hormone, cortisol.

The Solution:

Hi-Five Week aims to encourage unexpected and fun moments of connection on city streets. This campaign combats workplace stress by disrupting routine and relieving tension; making people share a quick spontaneous interaction that lightens their mood. By making the sidewalk more unpredictable and refreshing, Hi-Five Week improves wellbeing and creates conversation around a disregarded issue.

Five Ways To Wellbeing:

1. Connect
Reach out to the people around you to enrich your day as positive interactions with other people on the street can reduce your stress.

2. Be active
Take a moment to participate in something simple in your immediate environment and be open to playful situations.

3. Take notice
Be aware of the world around you, notice new opportunities, and remark on the unusual.

4. Keep learning
Learn to embrace unexpected experiences as challenging yourself and trying something different can help you unwind.

5. Give
Smile, give a moment of your time. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and will create connections with the people around you.
